Arçelik Breaks Ground On Thailand Plant

​Arçelik A.Ş., one of the leading players in the global home appliances industry, broke ground on its Thailand Refrigerator Plant. The Beko Thailand Plant, which is to go into operation by the end of 2015, will become the 7th production facility of Arçelik outside Turkey, following Romania, Russia, China and South Africa and the 15th in total.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Mustafa V. Koç, Chairman of Koç Holding, stated that Arçelik’s Beko brand has achieved a global success story.

“R&D performance, innovation driven approach, highest caliber people, high quality products and production capability under flexible market conditions, reinforce the position of our Beko brand in the world’s most competitive home appliance markets.

Southeast Asia is fast becoming one of the world’s most important economic centres and we believe Thailand has strong potential to be a manufacturing hub of this region. Arçelik represents Turkey and Koç Group all around the world with pride and success, with its achievements strengthening the global position of our country” said Mustafa V. Koç.

Levent Çakıroğlu, the President of Koç Holding Durable Goods and the CEO of Arçelik A.Ş., said : “Having a regional production facility in Thailand that can quickly respond to regional market needs is the key to achieve our growth plans in Southeast Asia. We believe Thailand will be a hub within the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), where we aim to replicate the success of the Beko brand in Europe.”

Arçelik A.Ş., the leading home appliances company in Turkey and the second biggest home appliances company in the Europe-Middle East-Africa (EMEA) region, has selected Thailand to be the location of its first production facility in Southeast Asia. Beko Thailand Plant, located on a 263,000 sqm, plot will produce refrigerators. Arçelik’s investment in Thailand is a significant step towards its goal of replicating in ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) the success of its global brand Beko in Europe.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Mustafa V. Koç, Chairman of Koç Holding, emphasized that entering into the developing markets has always been an essential part of Arçelik's global growth strategy and that Thailand is one of the most promising economies in Southeast Asia.

The fact that Thailand has a rising economy, strong network of supply industries, good infrastructure, a geographically central location and and importantly, our confidence in the Thai people have encouraged us to invest in this country. Koç said that Arçelik A.Ş. has achieved a global success story with Beko brand thanks to its ability to understand local needs and reliably fulfill them through high quality products and added: “Delivering on that commitment requires a global organisation that is staffed with the highest calibre people, production facilities that are both flexible and state-of-the-art, and strong R&D capabilities. This triple combination of assets has enabled us to embed innovation into our products rapidly and win market share in even the world’s most competitive home appliance markets, such as Germany, France and the UK.”

In relation to the Thailand investment, which would further strengthen the global position of Arçelik, Levent Çakıroğlu, the President of Koç Holding Durable Goods and the CEO of Arçelik A.Ş., said: “Having a regional production facility in Thailand that can quickly respond to regional market needs is the key to achieve our growth plans in Southeast Asia”.

Stating that Beko, the global brand of Arçelik A.Ş. which meets consumers in more than 100 countries, has been the brand which increased its market share the most in European white goods market within the last six years and thus has been the brand with the fastest growth in the sector, Çakıroğlu said the following: “Beko, the leader brand of U.K. white goods market for years, claimed top position in French free-standing white goods market in the first half of 2014 following its leadership in the Polish white goods market. Additionally, Beko has become the fastest growing white goods brand of the German market, the biggest white goods market of Europe, in the last 5 years with a more than 2-fold market growth. We believe Thailand will be a hub within the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), where we aim to replicate the success of the Beko brand in Europe”.

“We will export 90% of our production. We aim for sales of US$ 500 million in ASEAN within three years”.

Çakıroğlu said: “We will export 90% of our production. Within three years, we expect to export approximately US$ 310 million of Beko home appliances to almost 10 countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand apart from Thailand.”

“Beko Thailand Plant is being built with an investment of US$ 100 million and, within three years, will produce a total of more than 800,000 units of refrigerators, with the potential to expand further. We aim for sales of US$ 500 million in ASEAN within three years”. Çakıroğlu added.
